The Differences Between Yoga Retreats and Vacations
At first glance, you might think that a yoga retreat is not much more than a focused vacation. That couldn’t be further from the truth! While they both involve traveling to a new place and doing things you like, there are a number of differences between the two that make a yoga retreat a much more fulfilling (not to mention stress-free!) experience.
Connection with a like-minded community
There are so many things to love about yoga retreats, but this might just be our favorite! Having the opportunity to broaden your yoga community is such a gift. On your retreat, you’ll get to meet new people who are on the trip for the same reasons you are: a commitment to deepening your yoga practice, a taste for adventure, and a desire for a little bit of zen. When you try new things with new people, you may find that the way you process them is totally different than the way you might have at home. There’s nothing like a shared experience to bring people together, and we haven’t been on a retreat yet where we didn’t come home with a few new friends!
Easy solo travel Going hand in hand with that, we’re big fans of going on yoga retreats alone. If you’re hesitant to travel on your own but don’t have a travel buddy, yoga retreats are a great way to get to see and experience new things while still feeling comfortable. Although you won’t be traveling with a friend or family member, the group you’re traveling with offers safety in numbers. You’ll have people to go on excursions and share meals with, and you might even have a roommate!
Ability to book and go
In general, most yoga retreats will cover accommodations, meals, activities, yoga sessions, and ground transportation. (If they don’t cover these things, we’ll be honest, they may not be worth the money.) Aside from a meal or two and air travel to the retreat destination, everything is paid for and planned by the studio or organization offering the retreat. All you’ll have to worry about is making sure your bags are packed.
Smart on money
We know that the price tag on a yoga retreat can sometimes take a bit of getting used to. Here’s a better way of looking at it: because you’re looking at an all-inclusive rate, you know exactly how much your trip is going to cost well ahead of time. With the exception of plane tickets and any souvenirs you wish to bring home, you don’t have to worry about getting back from your trip, looking at your bank account or credit card statement, and feeling that post-vacay I-can’t-believe-I-spent-that-much dread sink in. Since you’ll have paid in advance for your accommodations, activities, and most of your meals in advance, you’ll be able to make a better financial plan for your pre- and post-retreat budget.
Focus on your intention
We often come home from our vacations feeling like we need another vacation. Making plans both before you leave and while you’re on your trip can be awfully stressful. Not so with yoga retreats! With Om On, as well as most studios with lots of retreat experience, we do all the heavy lifting when it comes to planning the trip so that you can put all of your attention on why you’re really there. It’s our job to make sure that your yoga retreat experience is as fruitful as possible, which for us means giving you the chance to clear your mind and experience true rejuvenation.
Wellness tips to take home
You’ll be going on your retreat with terrific yoga teachers, and they’ll be bringing along a wealth of knowledge on how not only a yoga practice but a broader wellness regimen can enhance your life. Many retreats will also have wellness experts, such as nutritionists or energy workers, on the trip who will share their expertise with you. Take advantage of them! They’re there to help you make life after your retreat happier and healthier, and having that kind of access to health and wellness pros is something money can’t buy.
Magical destinations The retreat location is as big a part of the experience as the yoga practice! We like going to places that are relaxing, peaceful, and absolutely stunning. Case in point: our next retreat, coming in spring 2019, will be at Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm, a lavender farm located outside of Albuquerque. It’s so important to us to provide a complete yoga retreat experience, and part of that is sharing amazing, once-in-a-lifetime locations with the yogis who join us. We hope you’ll come retreat with us in 2019!
