Shopping for Non-Plastic Yoga Mats

Our yoga practice leads us to an eco-friendly lifestyle. When we live the tenets of yoga, we cultivate a positive relationship with Mother Earth, meaning we aim for low or zero waste and do our best to live in harmony with nature. If we’re making green decisions off the mat, we should be taking into account the mat itself!

It might seem counterintuitive, but many yoga mats are not made with the environment in mind. If your mat is made from PVC, as many mass-produced mats are, your mat may contain toxic chemicals such as chlorine, ethylene, mercury, and dioxins. Dioxins in particular are a known carcinogen and can cause reproductive and immune problems. And when PVC plastic is produced or burned as a method of disposal, it emits these toxins into the environment. If you ask us, that does not lead to an authentic yoga practice. That’s why we’re passionate about using (and selling!) environmentally conscious yoga products that are free of PVC and other plastics.

Eco-friendly yoga products have become more common as brands feel the need to protect our Earth. While shopping, check details on labels or in online descriptions to see what materials are used in creating your mat. You can also check if the brand’s list anything about eco-friendly practices, or details of their process to reduce waste in their mats. We’re sharing some of our favorite picks with you today!
