Celebrating the New Year in a Mindful Way

We’ll be greeting the new year in just a few days. Although we tend to associate New Year’s Eve with blowout parties, there’s no law that says you have to spend your evening like that! If you’re looking for a more mindful way to ring in 2019, we’ve got you covered. Here are Om On’s favorite tips for a mindful New Year’s celebration!

Set Your Intentions
We talk a lot about how important it is to set intentions in yoga: on the mat, on a retreat, and as part of a mindful lifestyle. It’s tempting to just let life happen, but when you know what you want to work toward and you commit to it, your yoga practice and life itself become much more rewarding. Think of this as a different kind of New Year’s resolution. You aren’t just setting goals; you’re making a holistic choice to be the best version of yourself. What do you want to achieve? Where would you like to focus your growth? Which areas of your life do you feel you’ve improved upon, and how can you build on that? We recommend making intentions that can be built upon, so that you can both see growth and be encouraged to keep growing.

Look Back On 2018
If you aren’t quite sure where to start with your intentions, doing a year in review is a great way to figure out what’s working and what might need a little more love as you move into a new year. As you undertake this task, it’s important to stay positive. We learn just as much from the bad times as we do from the good. When it comes to things that didn’t go the way you wanted, or ways in which you could have done a little better, don’t look at them as negative experiences but rather as places to grow. And, of course, now is the time to celebrate all the great people, experiences, and personal growth in your 2018! Identifying our triumphs is the best way to ensure we keep that momentum going.

Clear the Air
Spaces absorb energy just as much as people do. Get your home in good shape for the new year by lighting a candle and burning sage. Pay special attention to the rooms and spots in which you spend the most time. When our home has positive vibes, it’s easier for us to be positive, too.

Have a Chill Night In
New Year parties have a reputation for being stressful and dramatic. The expectations are high and the pressure is on to make everything the biggest and best ever. That’s no way to start the year! All you need for a great New Year’s Eve celebration is people you care about. Invite your besties over for a healthy, delicious dinner, games, and the pleasure of each other’s company. If there are little ones around, have a balloon drop in the early evening (or if you’re in RVA, take them to Noon Year’s Eve at Lamplighter’s Addison Street location), then switch over to more grown up fun. A mindful, positive New Year’s Eve makes for a refreshed New Year’s Day!

We think this is a much better way to ring in the new year than a big, raging party, and we think you will too! And if you’re looking to add in some time on the mat on the 31st or 1st, Om On will be operating on a limited schedule to welcome 2019 into our hearts with yoga. We hope to see you there!
