Travel Diary: Primland

Travel Diary:  Primland Resort

This Spring we ventured to Primland Resort in Southwestern Virginia for some retreat scouting and photo shooting for our spring collection. If you’ve never been to Primland, you are really missing out on a hidden getaway like no other. Just 4 hours Southwest of Richmond and 1 hour South of Roanoke, Primland is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains on 12,000 acres of wild land. And it’s this wild land that makes Primland so special, as it offers a true escape into nature with views and vistas that will take your breath away. Not to mention the wildlife that call this part of the Blue Ridge home including, black bear, turkeys, fox, and the most melodious birds you’ve ever heard. With miles of hiking and biking trails, a lake for paddle boarding and kayaking, golf course, and archery, we settled right into life at Primland.

Though a luxury mountain lodge experience complete with an exquisite restaurant, s’mores, and indulgent spa, it was the warmth of the people and Primland’s commitment to the environment and history of the land that really touched us. Primland became a LEED Registered Property in 2012, and as such places the protection of their land as their highest priority. This love for the land we found in everything they do. We experienced this first hand when we embarked on a guided hike with one of Primland’s incredibly knowledgeable guides. Our guide made the forest come alive as he pointed out animal tracks, markings, artifacts, and local flora and fauna. It was truly an intimate look into the land of this region.

Ironically, looking back on our stay, we might very well say that it wasn’t the land but the sky that really stole our hearts. Primland is home to an Observatory Dome with a Celestron CGE Pro 1400 series, which in other words, made it seem like we could reach out and touch some far off galaxy. We were lucky enough to have a crystal clear night for our Stargazing, which is actually an activity on the activity schedule, and it was unlike nothing we had ever experienced.   Our session offered a glimpse into the night sky, providing us a way to utilize the sky as a compass, as well as an intimate portrait of the stars, nebulas, and constellations above us.

As the weekend came to an end we were sad to leave this magical paradise tucked away in the Blue Ridge, but we are thrilled to head back in 2018 as we bring a bit more of Om On Yoga to Primland. We will be partnering on a Wellness Weekend Retreat, so stay tuned for more details on our yoga retreats and in the meantime be sure to plant your feet on the Earth and turn your eyes to the sky!
